Captain America 4: Anthony Mackie to star as Cap in new MCU movie

Anthony Mackie will take up Captain America’s shield in Marvel Studios’ upcoming Captain America 4. Deadline reported Wednesday that Mackie has signed a deal to return to the MCU, this time as Captain America, months after the project was initially reported on.

Mackie will join Malcom Spellman, the showrunner behind the Disney Plus series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, who is set to develop the next installment and write the script for the fourth Captain America movie.

Mackie played Sam Wilson in the limited series and starred alongside Sebastian Stan, who starred as Bucky Barnes. The show explored the aftermath of Avengers: Endgame, after Steve Rogers left Captain America’s shield to Sam and prompted him to take up the mantle.

An after-credits scene in the show’s final episode hinted at something new to come, which we now know is the movie. It’s still unclear if his co-star Stan will join Mackie in the next film.

Polygon has reached out to Disney for comment but did not hear back in time for press.
