Dead Space remake confirmed with a teaser trailer, uses Frostbite engine

Yes, it’s true: Dead Space is coming back. At long last, following a lengthy series of rumors and hints, Isaac Clarke will return in a remake “rebuilt from the ground up” using the Frostbite engine. Electronic Arts confirmed its existence today during EA Play Live 2024, and dropped a spooky teaser trailer to drive the reality home.

Don’t expect any major shifts in the original game’s story. According to the game description, we’ll once again step into Isaac’s clomping space boots as he explores the spaceship, the USG Ishimura. The Dead Space remake will follow many of the original’s story and gameplay beats. Aboard the Ishimura, you stumble upon the grim reality that its populace have been reduced to The Thing-esque creatures called necromorphs. Survival consists of rigging engineering tools into weapons, slicing off necromorph limbs while collecting ammo and money drops.

“Isaac Clarke is an everyman engineer on a mission to repair a vast, sprawling starship, the USG Ishimura, only to discover something has gone horribly wrong,” reads the game’s description. “The ship’s crew has been slaughtered and infected by some alien scourge…and Isaac’s beloved partner, Nicole, is lost somewhere on board.”

In space, no one can hear you stomp

The original Dead Space came out in 2008 by Visceral Games. It was praised by fans and critics alike for its creepy atmosphere and rich sci-fi setting. The game spawned two sequels. However, by the third game it became clear that the series had abandoned many of its plodding horror elements for action and microtransactions. Visceral was shuttered four years after the release of Dead Space 3.

EA’s Motive Studios now leads the charge on the Dead Space remake. The game will receive “an improved story, characters, gameplay mechanics and more,” according to a press release. It’ll also use the power of the Frostbite game engine, which powers such games as Battlefield and Star Wars Battlefront.

“The Dead Space franchise made a huge impact on the survival horror genre when it was released 12 years ago, and I came to Motive as a fan first to specifically work on this game,” said Phillippe Ducharme, senior producer of Dead Space, in a press release. “We have a passionate team at Motive who are approaching this remake as a love letter to the franchise.

The Dead Space remake teaser trailer confirmed the game was heading to PC. However, it still seems too early to talk about a release date. But now that the game has been officially revealed, we’ll be sure to watch the vents and return with more information as it arrives.
