Demon Slayer and 11 new movies you can watch on Netflix, HBO, and Amazon

This weekend sees the theatrical premiere — not on Netflix, not on HBO Max — of F9, the latest installment in the uproariously acclaimed family drama action series starring Vin Diesel and Michelle Rodriguez. If for whatever reason you’re somehow not amped to venture out to the theaters for this week’s blockbuster du jour, there are still tons of awesome movies available to stream and rent from home this weekend!

For this week’s slate of new releases, we’ve got the highly-anticipated streaming premiere of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train, the blockbuster supernatural anime feature based on the acclaimed anime and manga series; Pierce Brosnan pops up again this week, this time in the Rosemary’s Baby riff False Positive; and Liam Neeson plays an ice road trucker for Netflix.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba The Movie: Mugen Train took the world by storm when it first premiered, becoming the highest-grossing rated-R anime film and the fourth highest-grossing film in the world during its initial theatrical run. Picking up from the end of the first season of the anime, the film follows Tanjirou Kamado and his Demon slaying cohorts as they join Kyojuro Rengoku, the “Flame Hashira,” aboard the so-called Mugen Train (or in English, Infinity Train) as they investigate a rash of mysterious disappearances. From our review,

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train is a brilliant encapsulation of the series’ strengths and appeal, filled with moments of pulse-pounding action, heady emotional gravitas, and fantastic character-affirming moments of levity and humor. It isn’t the best point for series newcomers to hop aboard the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba fandom, but nonetheless, it affirms itself as a thoroughly entertaining thrill-ride that feels both consequential and essential to watch.

False Positive

After months of attempting to get pregnant, Lucy (Ilana Glazer) and Adrian (Justin Theroux) seek out the aid of a fertility specialist in the form of Dr. Hindle (Pierce Brosnan). While seems well when the pair become pregnant with a healthy baby girl, Lucy is wracked by disturbing visions and begins to suspect that Hindle — and even her husband — have ensnared her in a plot of terrifying proportions. If that sounds like Rosemary’s Baby to you, well … it might be worth checking out!

The Ice Road

You’ve seen Liam Neeson on a train. You’ve seen him on a plane. Now you can finally see him driving a truck! The Ice Road stars Neeson as Mike, a big-rig ice road driver who must lead a seemingly impossible rescue mission to save the lives of a group of 26 trapped miners following the collapse of a diamond reserve. As a massive storm rages ahead, Mike must race across a frozen ocean expanse before time runs out.

Siberia

Willem Dafoe stars in Bad Lieutenant director Abel Ferrara’s psychological thriller Siberia as Clint, a non-Siberian expatriate who leaves his old life to open a bar. A bunch of weird shit happens (unless you don’t think getting attacked by a bear is weird, I guess) and, compelled by a series of hallucinations brought about by his lingering doubts and regrets, Clint sets out in his dog sled to uncover the traumas of his past and seek resolution. Not gonna lie to you, the trailer looks stiff, but maybe it’ll be dumb in a fun way?

The Unholy

Director Evan Spiliotopoulos’ The Unholy stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan (The Walking Dead) as Gerald “Gerry” Fenn, a disgraced journalist investigating the story of Alice (Cricket Brown), a young hearing-impaired girl alleged to be gifted with miraculous healing abilities. But when bizarre and horrific begin to unfold in the wake of Alice’s supposed “miracles,” it falls to Gerry to uncover the true source of her inexplicable powers.

Lansky

Starring Sam Worthington (Avatar) and Harvey Keitel (Mean Streets), Eytan Rockaway’s biographical crime drama follows down-on-his-luck writer David Stone (Worthington) reaches out to infamous gangster Meyer Lansky (Keitel) in order to tell his life story. John Magaro (Overlord, The Big Short) portrays Lansky in his youth, as the elder crime boss recounts the sordid tale of his rise through the criminal underworld. With the FBI listening in on their conversations in order to trace the source of Lansky’s hidden fortune, David must stay one step ahead of both them and his subject or risk landing himself in a shallow grave.

Luca

Pixar’s fantasy coming-of-age adventure Luca follows Luca Paguro (Room’s Jacob Tremblay) and his friend Alberto Scorfano (Shazam’s Jack Dylan Grazer), two young sea monsters who assume the forms of a pair of human children as they explore the idyllic Italian Riviera town of Portorosso. From our review,

In Luca, the magic is in the tiny details that flesh out the human world. The undersea setting is gorgeous, certainly, but the seaside town of Portorosso is what really shines. Through Luca and Alberto’s eyes, it makes sense that the human setting should be so lovingly augmented. All the little details — the laundry hanging between the streets, the uneven cobblestones, the posters on the walls — create a gorgeous rendition of the real world. It isn’t photorealistic, but it makes the town a little warmer, a little brighter, and a little more golden, almost like a rosy-tinged memory. The stylization bolsters this blissful summer shared by three friends.

Fatherhood

In Fatherhood Kevin Hart stars as Matt, a recent widower who must raise his new baby daughter alone as a single parent. As a comedian by trade, it’s seldom if outright unprecedented for audiences to see Hart tackling a more serious and emotionally charged role, but from the looks of the trailer, Fatherhood is shaping up to be an heartwarming and emotional story with a few classic gags thrown in for good measure.

The Space Between

Golden Globe winner Kelsey Grammer stars in Rachel Winter’s comedy drama The Space Between as Micky Adams, an eccentric has-been rock musician who loses his grip on reality after a late career slump defined by creative misfires and abysmal critical reception. In enters Charlie Porter (Jackson White), a young man sent by Adams’ label to force him out of his contract who harbors his own dreams of success. Together, the two form an unlikely friendship as Micky imparts on Charlie his own hard-earned lessons about music, love, and life.

Godzilla vs. Kong

The capstone of Legendary Entertainment’s Monsterverse reimagining of Toho’s most famous Kaiju is finally here in Adam Wingard’s Godzilla vs. Kong. In a fight between an ancient behemoth lizard that emits radiation and big ol’ ape with a heart of gold and palm full of sign language, who wins? The answer’s obvious: we do! From our review,

Godzilla vs. Kong is a 113-minute argument for movies projected on giant screens in front of crowds of people. It’s a smooth-brained good time. Depending on local pandemic recovery progress and restrictions, it will either triumphantly welcome moviegoers back into theaters with tremendous spectacle, or make the wait hurt that much more, as they watch it on HBO Max instead. I watched it at home, on my 55-inch TV, absolutely furious that I couldn’t see it in a theater, or at the very least, project it on the side of my apartment building. But I couldn’t stay mad for long, because I was too busy cheering out loud at the spectacle in front of me.

The Misfits

Pierce Brosnan (Golden Eye) stars in director Renny Harlin’s heist caper The Misfits as Richard Pace, a notorious confidence man and criminal who is recruited into an international band of vigilante thieves calling themselves, you guessed it, the Misfits. The group’s latest heist is their most daring: a cache of millions of gold bars locked beneath one of the world’s harshest and most remote prisons. With a cast rounded out by stars such as Nick Cannon (Wild ‘n Out), Tim Roth (Pulp Fiction), Rami Jaber, and Jamie Chung (Lovecraft Country), Brosnan is the obvious star powering this film’s entire appeal. If you’ve ever wondered what would it be like if a former James Bond led an Ocean’s Eleven-esque heist movie, you should consider giving The Misfits a shot.
