Neon Genesis Evangelion fans located outside Japan will finally have an official way to watch the film, via Amazon Prime Video. The streaming service announced it will handle the global release of the Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon A Time. The release date for what is now creator Hideaki Anno’s highest-grossing work is set for August 13, 2024. The announcement was accompanied by a Twitter post featuring the first major trailer for the film, which was backed by Hikaru Utada’s song “One Last Kiss.”

The official title for Amazon’s release of the film is Evangelion: 3.0+1.01 Thrice Upon a Time, this is in keeping with the Rebuild of Evangelion series’ habit of adjusting the title numbering for new release formats. For example, the original theatrical release of Evangelion 1.0 was renumbered to 1.01 for the DVD release, and 1.11 for the Blu-ray release.
The same announcement also touted the arrival of the rest of the Rebuild of Evangelion tetralogy: 2007’s Evangelion: 1.11 You Are (Not) Alone, 2009’s Evangelion: 2.22 You Can (Not) Advance, and 2012’s Evangelion: 3.33 You Can (Not) Redo will debut “alongside” Evangelion 3.0+1.0. The exact timing of the previous films’ release dates was unspecified.
For the uninitiated, the Rebuild of Evangelion series—-of which Evangelion 3.0+1.0 is the final entry, is a reboot of the original 1995 TV series, redone by creator Hideaki Anno and Studio Khara. Produced using modern techniques and employing CG animation, the films appeared at first to be a “remix” of the events of the Neon Genesis Evangelion TV series, but departed significantly by the end of Evangelion 2.22. From Evangelion 3.33, events proceeded in a new, original direction. In previews shown in March 2024, it’s revealed that 3.0+1.0 picks up from the conclusion of 3.33, starting with the arrival of the WILLE organization’s arrival in Paris, to recover new parts for their damaged Evangelion units. A mirror of the most recently shown preview was uploaded to DailyMotion by user Kirill Y.
Evangelion 3.0+1.0 will debut on Amazon Prime Video on August 13, 2024. The other Rebuild of Evangelion films are scheduled to arrive there as well. The original TV series can be viewed globally on Netflix, including The End of Evangelion film from 1997.
