Square Enix’s PlayStation role-playing game Final Fantasy 9 is being adapted into an animated series aimed at kids, producer and distributor Cyber Group Studios announced Tuesday.
The Final Fantasy 9 animated series is described as “an adventure animation series primarily aimed at 8-13-year-old kids and family audiences with respect to co-viewing” in Cyber Group’s news release. The show aims to “please game players, as the adaptation will maintain the world of the game thanks to the supervision of Square Enix, while incorporating some additional major production and entertainment value,” Cyber Group added.
A release window for Final Fantasy 9’s animated adaptation was not announced.
Paris-based Cyber Group Studios was founded in 2005. The company’s animated series include CGI shows like Gigantosaurus, Droners, My Goldfish is Evil, and Mirette Investigates, as well as series based on Mini Ninjas, Zorro, and Tom Sawyer.
Final Fantasy 9 first launched in 2000 on PlayStation. It was re-released in 2016 on Android, iOS, and PC; on PlayStation 4 in 2017; and on Nintendo Switch in 2019. The role-playing game stars Zidane Tribal, a thief who kidnaps (the willing) Princess Garnet and becomes embroiled in a war between the nations of Lindblum and Alexandria. On their journey, Zidane and Garnet join a diverse cast of characters that includes the Black Mage Vivi, Alexandrian knight Adelbert Steiner, the anthropomorphic rat dragoon Freya Crescent, and Qu chef Quina Quen.
