Footbal Manager to no longer use Manchester United name

To resolve trademark concerns club referral is changed as a “gesture of good will”

Sports Interactive, developer of Football Manager, announced today it will no longer use the Manchester United name.

The decision shared via Twitter, states that Manchester United and Sega resolved their trademark dispute over the club’s name to “mutual satisfaction.”

“From FM22 onwards, the Manchester United football club will be named ‘Manchester UFC’ or ‘Man UFC’,” the company said.

“These name changes have been made purely to settle the dispute on a no admissions basis.”

The studio further explains that it and Sega do not need a license to use the club’s name but the change was made as “a gesture of good will.”

The football simulator series features some real team and player’s names’ however due to licensing issues it regularly uses fake names.

Last year, Manchester United sued Sega and Football Manager developer Sports Interactive over trademark use.

The club attested that money being made by the licensing was significant and an incorrect logo next to its name was wrongful use.
