Here’s how to survive strategic shooter Scavengers’ wasteland

Scavengers is a free-to-play strategic shooter set in a frozen wasteland, which you must pick clean for precious material and then escape, fighting off not only other scavengers but also the hostile fauna of post-apocalyptic Earth. It’s in Steam Early Access right now and free to try, but it’s devilishly tricky to make it out alive. Fortunately, we’ve got a few tips to help you reach the top of the pack.

In case you’re unfamiliar, Scavengers sees squads of three players take to a challenging and hostile winter wasteland that throws a mixture of class-based PvP and sandbox-style PvE combat their way. You’ll pick one of a selection of characters – Explorers, as they’re called in the game – and adapt your approach to your enemies by picking from a range of unique abilities and weapons. As soon as a match kicks in, you’ll need to scramble to grab weapons and gear to survive.

As you tear around, you’ll have to keep your eyes peeled for other players, storms that can engulf you and freeze you to death, and PvE enemies both human and alien. Outlander Shrykes and Deadeyes snipe from towers and walls, while their Maulers and Rippers can rush you with melee damage.

Among the alienesque Scourge, there are Threshes that chase you, Shrills alerting others to your location, and Retches spewing noxious spit to worry about. If you can make it through all of that with a good haul of loot, you can only carry it safely into the next match if you can get on the dropship safely. That’s a task in itself.
