Arc System Works has revealed more details regarding the upcoming Kunio-kun’s Three Kingdoms game. After previously teasing the Chinese Three Kingdoms-themed River City game, the company confirmed that it will appear on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PC via Steam. Kunio-kun’s Three Kingdoms will be available first on the Switch, with the PS4 and PC versions following later. [Thanks, 4Gamer!]
As implied by the title, this title is inspired by Romance of the Three Kingdoms. It will retell events like the Yellow Turban Rebellion and the Battle of Red Cliffs in a comical way. Recurring characters from the River City series will act as heroes from the classical epic. For example, the protagonist Kunio is depicted as the god of war Guan Yu.
Kunio-kun’s Three Kingdoms will feature side-scrolling action gameplay, which was commonly used in prior series titles. The game will have a new Stratagem system that can inflict damage to all enemies on screen. An example of the Stratagems is the Fire Tactic, where Kunio — acting as Guan Yu — summons a unit of fire archers to burn his enemies.
The map system in this game will have interconnected areas. It will include not only battlefields but also non-combat areas like cities and villages. The game will also have secret areas that the player can access by using an attack or Stratagem at a specific place.
Downtown Special: Kunio-kun’s Three Kingdoms – All Are Assembled! will come first to Nintendo Switch in December 2024. Arc System Works will release the PlayStation 4 and PC versions in April 2024 or later.
