Eidos Montreal’s upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy is looking promising, especially thanks to its focus on delivering a single player narrative-driven action-adventure experience, but at the same time, it’s also quite different from the sort of stuff the studio has usually been known for. More specifically, with their history of delivering excellent immersive sim RPGs in the Deus Ex games, it should be interesting to see how Guardians shapes up.
Then again, it’s not like there is no choice-based gameplay involved here. Narrative and dialogue choices are definitely still a thing and will impact the narrative, and that, as you would expect, means a lot of dialogue. Combined with just a lot of chatter and banter between the titular Guardians, that means the game has twice as much dialogue as a Deus Ex title.
“I think we have twice as much dialogue in this game than a Deus Ex game,” said senior gameplay director Patrick Fortier in an interview with Game Informer (via Pure Xbox). “They say a lot of stuff. Sometimes it’s fun, we’re testing the game and we’re putting the controller down because we’re writing some notes or whatever and then they’ll start [being like] ‘yo, remember that time on…’ and ‘oh yeah, that was a fun night’. You’ll start hearing anecdotes or things about how they met. The more time you give the game, the more it’s going to give back – it’s that kind of a game.”
You can check out some of the dialogue choices through here. The game will also present mid-combat choices through something called the Huddle- read more on that through here.
Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is out on October 26 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One, and PC, as well as the Nintendo Switch as a cloud-exclusive release. And don’t worry- the game won’t have any DLC or microtransactions.
