Nintendo has now shifted 89 million Nintendo Switch systems since 2017

Nintendo has released its earnings for the April-June 2024 quarter this morning and they come across as impressive, despite the ongoing pandemic. The Kyoto-based company has now sold 89.04 million Nintendo Switch systems since the platform made its spectacular debut in March 2017. The pandemic has clearly affected video game release across the board, as developers have been asked to work from home and there have been widespread component shortages. Nintendo will be releasing a souped up version of the Nintendo Switch which features an OLED screen and better audio in October along with the highly anticipated Metroid Dread. As the Verge points out, Nintendo’s holiday lineup should hopefully impress with games such as Metroid Dread, WarioWare: Get It Together, Mario Party Superstars, and Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.

“Switch hardware sales were down 21.7 percent to 4.45 million units, and software sales decreased 10.2 percent to 45.29 million units. Nintendo has now sold 89.04 million Switch consoles in total; for comparison, the PS5 just hit 10 million. Revenue decreased 9.9 percent to 322.6 billion yen ($2.94 billion), while operating profit was 119.6 billion yen ($1.09 billion), a 17.3-percent decline year-on-year.”
