The character roster in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate technically should have stopped expanding a while ago, but in September 2019 Nintendo announced it would keep going with a second fighter pass.

So far it’s given us Min Min from ARMS, Steve and Alex from Minecraft, Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII, Pyra and Mythra from Xenoblade Chronicles 2, and now Kazuya from Tekken. That brings us to the very last slot in Fighters Pass Volume 2.

During the latest “Mr. Sakurai Presents” – showcasing Kazuya, the game’s director briefly touched on this next fighter at the very end of the broadcast. While it’s still a while away, he’s made it clear that this time around, it really will be the last fighter for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. He also reaffirmed it would be arriving this year:

“Up until now, we’ve created all sorts of fighters and stages. Gathering all of these games, new and old, and compiling them into a single product is a task that has meant a lot to me. Now that I think about it, it’s been close to 10 years since Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS systems was in development. I’ve been working on this for a long time. You could call it my life’s work.

“But finally, the next DLC fighter will be the last one. There won’t be any more after that. It’ll be a while before that announcement, but it’ll be available this year as planned, so please be patient. It seems like the team will have to complete this project at home, right up until the end. Until then, we hope you enjoy playing as Kazuya Mishima.”

There you go then – with a roster of over 80 characters, the development of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for the Switch will finally be complete when the next fighter arrives. Who do you think will be lucky last? Who would you like it to be? Share your thoughts down below.
