Sony acquires Avengers and PC port studio Nixxes Software

As of late, Sony has rapidly acquired companies, events, and studios left and right. Earlier this year, Sony got a hold of Evo, the biggest fighting game tournament in the world, and just a few days ago, Sony acquired Housemarque, the developer behind the well-received Returnal. The acquisition streak by Sony continued today, as Dutch studio and PC port team Nixxes Software joined PlayStation Studios. Hermen Hulst, the head of PlayStation Studios, announced the news on his Twitter page.

Hulst expressed excitement over the acquisition, saying that “it’s a real pleasure to welcome a team with such deep technical expertise and vast experience to the PlayStation family.” In a press release, Hulst said that Nixxes will become “a strong asset for everyone across PlayStation Studios, helping our teams focus on their most important goal, which is to create unique PlayStation content at the best possible quality.” Jurjen Katsman, the founder of Nixxes Software, echoed Hulst’s excitement, saying that “we can’t wait to get to work and are so excited to bring our technical and development expertise to an IP powerhouse like PlayStation Studios.”

What has Nixxes worked on?

Nixxes has helped with a handful of projects over the years. Most recently, Nixxes helped develop its biggest game ever in the form of Marvel’s Avengers. Crystal Dynamics served as the primary developer for the game, but several of Nixxes’ content and cross-discipline development teams made contributions under Crystal Dynamics’ supervision. Most people familiar with Nixxes know the studio for its PC ports and optimization work. The studio also worked prominently on the Tomb Raider franchise, as it converted all three reboot entries to various platforms, particularly PC.

Sony aims to port more of its games to PC in the future, which may provide some insight into the acquisition of Nixxes. Reportedly, because of “contractual commitments,” no details on the acquisition’s financial terms have been disclosed.
