Watch 25 minutes of new gameplay in this week’s VR Corner.
Arvore, the studio behind the retro-tastic Pixel Ripped series is back this week with a brand new VR game called Yuki.
Yuki launches on Oculus Quest and PC VR platforms on the 22nd of July and it’s best described as a VR bullet-hell roguelike. Instead of using a controller to move a space ship across a flat screen though, in Yuki, you use motion controls to hold an anime-inspired action figure as you weave it in an out of increasingly intense volleys of enemy fire.
The game is presented like it’s being played out in a child’s imagination, so if you ever played with a Kenner toys X-Wing back in the day and whooshed it around your bedroom pretending to shoot at TIE Fighters, you’ll get the idea.
You can watch me play through the first three levels of Yuki in this week’s episode of VR Corner, which is handily embedded just below these words. There’s power-ups, boss fights, cat-balls (?!) and more!
Compared to Arvore’s Pixel Ripped games, Yuki is very simple and this one is definitely aimed at the younger, less experience VR users. That doesn’t stop the gameplay being quite moreish though, as the unlockable power-ups bring with them that classic roguelike experience where every run feels slightly different to the last.
Although Yuki’s difficulty ramps up pretty quickly, the gameplay remains pretty basic throughout and on the couple of times I made it to the 4th episode the changes to each level did feel quite minimal. That’s not to say there won’t be bigger changes later on, I’ve only played about 2 hours worth of the game so can’t speak about what lies in the game’s second half, but so far I’ve encountered little that will bring lasting appeal to VR veterans who are after jaw-dropping experiences.
If you like the look of Yuki but only have access to Playstation VR, fear not. You’ll have to wait a little longer to get your hands on it but the PSVR version is due out later this year.
