Halo Infinite battle royale discussions are ramping up once more after dataminers apparently uncovered a voice clip hidden within the files of the technical preview. The clip, shared by online forum Resetera, very clearly consists of Halo‘s legendary multiplayer announcer, Jeff Steitzer, saying “Battle Royale.”
But what does that mean? Well, in most Halo games, Steitzer voices the invisible, omnipresent multiplayer announcer. Every time you hear “double kill!” or “Flag Dropped! Flag Taken! Flag Dropped,” that’s Steitzer’s voice reverbing through your head. But mid-game announcements are not all Steitzer provides; he also shouts out the name of the game type you’re playing. Considering dataminers have discovered an audio clip of him saying “Battle Royale,” this could mean that it’s under consideration after all at developer 343 Industries.
However, that’s not necessarily a guarantee. The developer could have requested the audio clip just in case the mode would be considered. It’s also not a stretch to believe that 343 may have been toying with the idea at one point, only to reverse course to focus solely on arena-style multiplayer.
“Taken the lead”
In 2019, 343 made its stance on the popular battle royale mode fairly clear. Halo Infinite was not going to have a battle royale mode, according to Frank O’Connor, the franchise creative director for Halo. In 2019, he replied to a thread discussing a Halo Infinite battle royale rumor on the Resetera forum.
“We are NOT doing this as of now — and no plans to — but Battle Royale could be made for any of the Halo games in MCC or 5 with some content and scripting additions, because it is a mode,” he wrote.
However, this was back in 2019, which feels like a decade ago at this point. The existence of the voice line, which you can hear below, is likely due to two possibilities. The first is that battle royale was at one point on the development chalkboard for Halo Infinite. For the second, though, 343 may have changed its mind during the two years between then and now, and we could see the mode make it into the game.
It does make sense for 343 to keep the voice line in its back pocket, regardless. After all, the battle royale mode is what’s hot in the world of competitive multiplayer, and it can certainly be a boon for Halo Infinite. The franchise has historically been all about arena-style shooting for its multiplayer portion. However, that mode isn’t nearly as popular nowadays. Even the makers of Call of Duty saw the writing on the wall, eventually creating its own battle royale with Warzone. I believe a battle royale mode in Halo Infinite can work, and it could be a lot of fun. Imagine shorter matches on smaller maps, where you and a team of Spartans drop down via Pelican or ODST drop pods. It kind of sounds awesome.
