Today marks Donkey Kong’s 40th anniversary, with the original game hitting Japanese arcades back on 9th July 1981. To celebrate the occasion, ex-Rare staffer Steve Mayles – now of Playtonic Games – has shared a lovely piece of new artwork featuring our favourite ape duo.
You can see the full piece for yourself in Steve’s tweet below; it features both DK and Diddy hurtling along a minecart track, no doubt on their way to hunt down Kong pieces, grab bananas, and put an end to King K. Rool’s evil doings.
Perfect.
While Mayles might be best known to some as the creator of Banjo-Kazooie‘s Banjo and Kazooie, his work on the original Donkey Kong Country titles is right up there with the very best in his painfully impressive portfolio. He’s also responsible for the creation of King K. Rool – back when the character was brought into the world of HD for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, he revealed to us that, in his mind, “K.Rool couldn’t have come back with a bigger bang.”
How will you be celebrating DK’s 40th today? Do you have the time to boot up an old classic? Let us know in the comments below.
