Fortnite seems to be getting a Mistborn crossover

The world of Scadrial seems to be joining the Fortnite metaverse. Scadrial belongs to the Mistborn book series written by Brandon Sanderson, who teased the collaboration by retweeting the official Fortnite Twitter account. But it’s not clear just yet what is actually coming to the game.

If you aren’t into fantasy books, Brandon Sanderson is among the most popular and prolific authors working in the genre at the moment — he’s written in other genres but fantasy is what he’s best known for. Among fans’ favorite Sanderson books is the Mistborn series, which currently has two separate sequels and one shorter transition book between. Sanderson’s also got another extremely popular fantasy series called The Stormlight Archive, which will eventually stretch to 10 books but has only released four so far.

Based on the Fortnite Twitter account’s first tease of Epic’s collaboration with the author, it seems that whatever’s coming to the game is Mistborn-related.

The tweet has a short message along with a symbol at the top that in the Mistborn world represents iron, one of the metals used in Allomancy, the series’ metal-based magic system. In Allomancy, iron allows users to pull other metals to them — something that would actually fit right into Fortnite. Unfortunately, I’m not enough of a Mistborn fan (I’ve only read The Stormlight Archive, I’m sorry) to have much interpretation of the message itself.

Technically, both Mistborn and The Stormlight Archive series, along with many of Sanderson’s other works, take place within one larger universe called the cosmere. It’s almost like Sanderson’s own version of Epic’s metaverse, except the connections are rarely made explicit. With that in mind, just because Sanderson and Epic are teasing Mistborn-related content now, doesn’t mean other parts of the cosmere couldn’t be on the way later.

Also a mystery is what exactly this crossover might include. While it’s possible that Epic could add some version of Mistborn’s Allomancy to the game, there will also likely be a few cosmetic items included as well. On top of that, we’re only a couple of weeks away from a new Fortnite season beginning, so it’s possible the collaboration could be even bigger.

Update: For now, it seems that this tease was only for a new Fortnite skin for Kelsier, one of the main characters of Mistborn. Kelsier’s skin arrives with a loading screen, the Hemalurgic Spikes Back Bling, and the Volcanic Glass Daggers Pickaxe and is in the Fortnite in-game store now.
