Publisher says no player data was accessed, does not expect attack to impact games or business
Electronic Arts has confirmed a recent data breach in which hackers stole source code for a number of games, according to a Vice Motherboard report.
The outlet said hackers on underground forums had claimed to have stolen some 780GB of data, including source code for FIFA 21 and its matchmaking server, source code and tools from the Frostbite engine, and other items.
EA confirmed the basics of the report to Motherboard, saying, “We are investigating a recent incident of intrusion into our network where a limited amount of game source code and related tools were stolen.
“No player data was accessed, and we have no reason to believe there is any risk to player privacy. Following the incident, we’ve already made security improvements and do not expect an impact on our games or our business. We are actively working with law enforcement officials and other experts as part of this ongoing criminal investigation.”
Motherboard reported that the hackers did not distribute any of the stolen data, intending to sell it instead.
