Grab your portal gun and your dice bags because Rick and Morty vs. Dungeons & Dragons is set to return for its third Comic-Con actual play this Saturday, July 24 at 12 p.m. PDT.
The livestream is a part of Comic-Con@Home, a three-day online event that will take place this weekend after the in-person San Diego Comic-Con was postponed (yet again) due to the ongoing pandemic.
For the uninitiated, an actual play depicts real people playing through tabletop role-playing games like D&D or Pathfinder, which are either live streamed or pre-recorded. Some notable actual plays include Critical Role, The Adventure Zone, and Dimension 20.
This particular crossover actually began life as a boxed starter set. Wizards of the Coast and Adult Swim released Dungeons & Dragons vs. Rick and Morty in 2019, complete with rules, dice, and a short adventure. This is the third year in a row that the setting has been explored in an actual play from San Diego Comic-Con, and the cast this time around is excellent.
Satine Phoenix, who is moderating the event, is a professional Dungeon Master (DM), streamer, and a former community manager for D&D. Phoenix is gearing up to launch the upcoming 5th edition campaign setting Sirens: Battle of the Bards, which is based on her popular, long-running actual play of the same name. It’s not 100% clear whether or not Phoenix will be joining the session as a player or if she’s just going to perform the typical emcee duties of a panel moderator. We’ll just have to tune in to find out.
Behind the screen as DM will be Jim Zub. He’s a writer and artist who co-authored the Rick and Morty vs. Dungeons & Dragons comic series with Patrick Rothfuss. He also wrote and designed the adventure that came packed with the Rick and Morty-themed starter set.
Joining in as player characters are Troy Little, the Eisner Award-nominated illustrator whose work includes the Rick and Morty vs D&D comics; Fred Van Lente, writer for Marvel Zombies 2 and 3 as well as the Incredible Hercules comics; and Robert Meyers, an editor with Oni Press.
The Rick and Morty vs D&D actual play will be streamed live on YouTube. A video link will appear closer to showtime, and we’ll also embed it in this article. In the meantime, check out a full list of live events and streams happening this weekend on the SDCC programming schedule page.
Alternatively, if you have an interdimensional cable box, you can tune into these streams at any time.
