PS5 Game Boost: How Does It Work?

PS5 Game Boost uses the additional horsepower available in Sony’s next-gen console to improve the way backwards compatible PS4 software performs. When enabled, some titles will see enhancements based on how they’re programmed. For example, if a game has an unlocked framerate with a theoretical 60 frames-per-second cap on the PS4 Pro, it may fluctuate between 40 frames-per-second and 60 frames-per-second. With the hardware available in the PS5, however, this same title would provide a locked 60 frames-per-second on the newest PlayStation system.

It’s important to note that you’ll only see improvements based on the way the game is programmed. If a title has a capped 30 frames-per-second, then the only advantage you’ll see on PS5 is that it’ll never dip below 30 frames-per-second; it’d need to be patched to go higher. The same is true of resolution; some games utilise scalers which alter the resolution based on what’s happening on the screen. In these instances, the PS5 will get closer to the title’s theoretical maximum more of the time – but only if it’s programmed that way to begin with.

Developers can patch their existing software to take better advantage of PS5 Game Boost, such as unlocking framerates and resolutions. In this article, we’ve compiled a list of all major PS4 game improvements, made possible due to PS5 Game Boost.
