Snake Eyes trailer: Henry Golding commands the G.I. Joe reboot

The G.I. Joe cinematic universe is back with a full reboot, on display in the first trailer for Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins, which debuted during the MTV Movie Awards. The new movie will follow the training and early battles of the deadly ninja Snake Eyes, and likely show how he joined the G.I. Joe team.

The trailer keeps things extremely vague and only hints at the story the movie might follow. We see Snake Eyes, played by Crazy Rich Asians star Henry Golding, as he seems to begin training with the G.I. Joe-universe Japanese clan called the Arashikage. With them, Snake Eyes learns how to become a ninja warrior and keep peace in the world. But we don’t get many details on what might be threatening that peace.

Instead the trailer is full of quick but brief shots of action scenes, like a highway motorcycle chases, a rooftop sword-fight in the rain, and a close quarters gun fight. We also get appearances from a member of Cobra called The Baroness, played by Úrsula Corberó from Money Heist, and Snake Eyes’ likely ally Scarlett, played by Samara Weaving from Ready or Not.

Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins is a completely fresh start for the series’ theatrical universe. The previous big-screen versions of the G.I. Joe universe had two movies: 2009’s G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and 2013’s G.I. Joe: Retaliation. Neither movie managed to become a smash hit at the box office, or be particularly good, so Paramount decided to retool the series and start over from scratch.

Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins is scheduled to release in theaters on July 23.
