Sony has pushed the theatrical release date for its Venom movie sequel. Previously slated for a Sept. 24 release, Venom: Let There Be Carnage will now hit theaters on Oct. 15, Sony Pictures announced Thursday.
This marks the third time the movie’s release has been pushed; originally, the sequel was slated for October 2024, before being bumped to June 2024 because of COVID-19 concerns, then to September. Sony is committed to keeping a theatrical release for the film.
The movie is a follow-up to 2018’s Venom, and will revisit Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) and the symbiote as they face off against a new symbiote: Carnage, whose host is serial killer Cletus Kennedy (Woody Harrelson). There is no word on what this means for other Sony-Marvel films, like Morbius, which is set for a Jan. 21, 2024 release date.
While Sony is holding its latest superhero movie, Marvel hasn’t made any similar announcements about its upcoming Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings, which is set to be released on Sept. 3. The success of both Shang-Chi and Venom — supposing it actually comes out on its new release date — will likely have an impact on Marvel and Sony’s decision around Spider-Man: No Way Home, which is currently set to be released on Dec. 17, but still hasn’t gotten its first trailer.
