Funimation is translating its biggest hits into Spanish

Latinx fans and anime go way back, with shows airing on Latin American broadcast networks, inspiring soccer players, and taking root long before the streaming boom and Toonami. Now some of that love is finding its way back.

In recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month — which runs from Sept. 15 – Oct. 15 — Funimation has announced it will be releasing hundreds of episodes both dubbed and subtitled in Spanish and Portuguese throughout the month of September.

The new subs and dubs are an extension of an effort that began earlier this year to make more of the streamer’s offerings available in Spanish and Portuguese, and that includes many of the platform’s top shows. The titles range from older classics like Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood and Cowboy Bebop; newer hits like Sk8 the Infinity and Wonder Egg Priority; to modern juggernauts like My Hero Academia and Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. Considerably more episodes — over 1,000, according to Funimation — will be subtitled, with the service putting the number of episodes receiving new dubs at “more than 600.”

Consider giving the new dubs a shot if you want to have an experience like my own: someone whose first time watching Dragon Ball Z was not on Toonami, but on a tiny TV set in Guatemala, in Spanish. Or watch it subbed in Spanish, and dubbed in another language. Practice two languages at once! If Fullmetal Alchemist taught me anything, it’s that it is very important to be able to explain the laws of transmutation no matter where you are.
